THE INSECT APOCALYPSE:Bugs are in trouble & no,that’s not good for us!

July 13th 7pm

Let’s face it, most of us would not miss mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. And yet, the truth is that insects are an absolutely essential (and sometimes beautiful) part of the web of life.

At the same time, insects are in deep trouble. Think about how many fewer fireflies, butterflies, or lady bugs you see now than years ago. In fact, scientists estimate that insect populations have decreased at a “terrifying rate of decline”, about 50 to 75% over the last century.

What is causing this “insect apocalypse”? What is the essential role of these creepy, crawly, flying creatures and what happens as these species decline so dramatically? Olivia Matise is a biologist and Pollinator Conservation Specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.

We will also discuss recent changes to streamline environmental review for new housing developments and how that could impact our communities. Elizabeth Ahearn is Conservation Associate for Sierra Club’s Atlantic Chapter. She’ll give a brief update and answer questions.

This event is co-sponsored by the Rockland Audubon Society and the Lower Hudson Group of the Sierra Club.
